Flight:
Volume Two reviewed by Randy
Lander at The
Fourth Rail
"The
first Flight roster was made up mostly
of names that comic readers wouldn't
know, even though a lot of these creators
had worked on comic fan-friendly animated
projects, or more widely seen commercial
art or webcomics. With the reputation
of Flight firmly established, volume
two sees some more established names
joining the roster. Michel Gagne, who
has his own comic Zed as well as having
done backups in Detective Comics, opens
the book with the visually stunning
wordless tale of a normal-looking fox
enduring the dangers of his homeworld
with the help of a mysterious alien.
Doug TenNapel, of Tommysaurus Rex and
Creature Tech fame, enters the fray
with a bizarre and charming tale of
two anthropomorphic friends throwing
a tea party that reads like a cross
between kids' cartoon Maisy and TenNapel's
own twisted Earthworm Jim. Demo's Becky
Cloonan delivers some visual poetry
with lyrics by Greek cartoonist Vasilis
Lolos that looks almost like a comic
book version of a music video. And
Bone's Jeff Smith delivers an all-too-brief
but still fun four-pager about two
friends walking through space while
one suffers ultimately dangerous hunger

Unused
cover for ZED #6
Here's
a picture of an unused cover I did for
ZED #6.
I
created the cover about a year before I
actually did the inside pages.
Once I
completed the issue, I
didn't feel like the cover worked stylistically
with the inside of the book. It felt flat
and boring.
Just
before sending the book to the printer,
I quickly
put together a new cover (which I liked
much better). I hope you'll agree. You
can click on either picture for a larger
view.
By

ZED
#6 will be in stores in about a

Flight:
Volume Two reviewed at The Fourth Rail
"Though
maturity and thoughtfulness shine through in much of
the material in this volume, most of the stories boast
a charming innocence. Doug TenNapel's slightly surreal
and twisted story of a tea party, for example, is hilarious,
but it's the simplicity of the main character's motives
constrasted against the more bizarre elements that
from which the short story derives its strength. Though
the mood shifts from story to story, there's an overall
playfulness to the book that's rather soothing and
welcome. Another recurring trait is a sense of the
surreal, of a dream-like fluidity. Given that quality,
Michel Gagne was the perfect choice to open the book.
His cute yet organic style captures that weirdness
perfectly but presents it in a most beautiful light." (read

Frenzied

A
New Look
Those
who come here regularly will notice a big change in
the home and news page. I have essentially combined
both. This way, the main page will be a lot more informative
and up to date. It should also make the website easier
to navigate. Of course, the gut of the site will remain
the same. That would be too much of a task for me to
fix it all.
Kazu
Kabuishi is the one who suggested I do this about a
year ago. It's been in the back of my mind ever since.
Last
night, I was looking at Kazu's "Flight" website,
admiring the way the home page was set up. I uploaded
the layout in my computer to analyze it.
Well,
this triggered a chain of events and here we are. I
feel like my new layout is a total rip-off of Kazu's
site, but I don't think he'll mind.

Flight
Crew Exhibit at Gallery Nucleus
Last
week, I received an email from Kazu
Kibuishi telling me about an upcoming art show
from the "Flight crew". He kindly asked me
if I could submit a piece, since my name was already
on the back of the promotional flyer.
Well,
I just can't say no to Kazu, so I did a little ink
and color pencil drawing of Rex with a strange monster,
framed it and shipped it to the gallery. Click

Unfortunately,
I won't be able to attend the opening, but it should
be a terrific show. If you're in the Los Angeles area
